Outlast is Red Barrels' brutal found-footage horror - a weaponless sprint through Mount Massive Asylum with nothing but your camcorder's night vision, a dwindling battery and your legs. The base 100% is short, but the difficulty runs steal the show.

Good news first: the main story achievements - ILLUMINATEDILLUMINATED, FLUSHEDFLUSHED, SOAKEDSOAKED, ELEVATOR OPERATOR, EMANCIPATEDEMANCIPATED and PUNISHEDPUNISHED - all unlock just by playing through the asylum, so you can't miss them. The documents and recordings (EDUCATEDEDUCATED, PULITZERPULITZER) are the only collectibles, so grab them on a relaxed first run with a locations guide - you will not want to dawdle later.

The real 100% is all in the difficulty. LUNATICLUNATIC (finish Insane) is tense - one death restarts the whole game - and ENERGISER (Insane without ever reloading a camera battery) is the true nerve test; keep night vision down and hoard your charge. CLAUSTROPHOBE (never hide under a bed or in a locker) is best knocked out on your easy collectibles run.

Recommended order: a calm Normal playthrough for the story, all documents/recordings and CLAUSTROPHOBE, then steel yourself for the two Insane runs. The WHISTLEBLOWERWHISTLEBLOWER DLC then repeats the pattern - finish, Insane, and its own collectibles. Not a long list, but Insane Outlast earns its stripes.

Finish Whistleblower on Insane - same one-death-back-to-the-start rules as LUNATICLUNATIC, but for the DLC. The DLC's set-pieces (the Groom's dinner-party chase especially) are the white-knuckle bits, so learn them on an easier run first. Optional.

Finish the game without ever hiding under a bed or inside a locker. You can still duck behind cover, break line of sight and round corners - just never use those two dedicated hide-spot interactions. Outrun and out-corner your pursuers instead. Easiest on your relaxed Normal collectibles run so you're not also wrestling Insane. Difficulty-independent, so any mode counts.

Documents are the notes and files you pick up; recordings trigger when you raise the camcorder at a scripted point of interest (the camera icon flickers - film it). A milestone on the way to PULITZERPULITZER, so if you're going for the lot you'll pass this naturally. A locations map saves backtracking.

An early scripted story moment at the main elevator. It happens automatically as you progress along the critical path, so there's nothing special to do - just play on and it unlocks. Unmissable.

Unmissable. Getting through the Female Ward requires finding its key - a required objective on the main path, so it unlocks as you follow the story. Nothing to seek out specially.

Finished the game in Insane Mode without reloading camera batteries

The hard one. Finish Insane without ever reloading a camera battery - so the whole game on your starting charge, never once hitting reload. The battery only drains while night vision is up, so play with the camcorder DOWN wherever there's any ambient light and only raise night vision in true pitch-black. Picking spare batteries up is fine (it's the reload action that voids it) - you just never use them. Do this and LUNATICLUNATIC and PUNISHEDPUNISHED come in the same run.

Drained the Sewers

Story-forced. During the sewers you have to drain the flooded tunnels to carry on - operate the drainage valve as prompted. It's the only way forward, so unmissable.

A Whistleblower objective - turn off the gas when the DLC calls for it. It's part of the DLC's campaign path, so you'll tick it off by progressing. Optional (DLC content).

Unmissable main objective. Early on you're sent to restore power to the Administrative Block - make your way down to the basement and start the emergency generator as the game directs. You can't progress without it, so it can't be missed.

Finish the game on Insane. Insane means one hit kills you and - the killer part - death sends you right back to the start with no checkpoints. It's a nerve test more than a skill test: learn the enemy patrol routes on an easier run first, move deliberately, and only sprint when you have to. Clears PUNISHEDPUNISHED at the same time.

Every document and recording in the main game. Documents are picked up as you pass them; recordings are earned by raising the camcorder when the camera icon flickers at a moment of interest, then letting Miles narrate. Sweep them on an early, calm run with a locations guide - a couple of recordings are easy to walk straight past, so film anything that makes the icon appear. Covers EDUCATEDEDUCATED on the way.
