Return of the Obra Dinn
Achievement guide · roadmap · tracker
Return of the Obra Dinn is Lucas Pope's first-person deduction mystery in a striking 1-bit monochrome style. You're an East India Company insurance adjuster who, in 1807, boards the recovered ghost ship Obra Dinn - lost five years earlier with all 60 souls aboard. Armed with the Memento Mortem, a pocket watch that replays the frozen instant of a death, you walk through 60 vignettes to reconstruct the fate of every soul: their identity, and how they died or otherwise left the ship.
Every one of the 16 achievements flows from that single deduction loop. The book only locks correct entries in confirmed sets of three, so the whole list is really one long puzzle with milestone pops (Any 6,
Any 15,
Any 30,
Any 45), per-chapter completions, and the grand
Obra Done - plus two quirky secrets that reward deliberately not finishing properly.
Reckon 10-15 hours: mechanically trivial (no skill or difficulty settings), but the deduction is genuinely hard. Recommended: just solve the book honestly - every milestone, every chapter and Obra Done come naturally on the way to all 60 fates. Then grab the two secrets (Abandon Ship,
Captain Did It) - both want deliberately wrong or early actions, so do them on a backup save to keep your honest solve safe. (Note: Chapter VIII has no achievement - it only unlocks after the other 58 fates are solved.)
Any 6
CommonSolve any 6 fates.
Correctly solve any 6 fates (identity + cause of death). Fates confirm only in locked trios, so this pops early and unavoidably as you deduce.
Any 15
CommonSolve any 15 fates.
The same cumulative counter at 15 solved fates - pops automatically partway through.
A Bitter Cold
CommonSolve all fates in chapter II.
Correctly solve every fate in Chapter II.
Loose Cargo
CommonSolve all fates in chapter I.
Correctly solve every fate in Chapter I. Because entries confirm in trios, it pops once all this chapter's souls are locked in with the right name and cause.
Any 30
CommonSolve any 30 fates.
Cumulative counter at 30 solved fates - the halfway mark of the 60 souls.
The End
CommonSolve all fates in chapter X.
Correctly solve every fate in Chapter X, the final chapter.
Murder
CommonSolve all fates in chapter III.
Correctly solve every fate in Chapter III.
Any 45
CommonSolve any 45 fates.
Cumulative counter at 45 solved fates - the last milestone before completion.
Escape
CommonSolve all fates in chapter IX.
Correctly solve every fate in Chapter IX. (There's no Chapter VIII achievement - that chapter only unlocks after the other 58 fates are solved.)
Unholy Captives
CommonSolve all fates in chapter V.
Correctly solve every fate in Chapter V.
Soldiers of the Sea
CommonSolve all fates in chapter VI.
Correctly solve every fate in Chapter VI.
The Calling
CommonSolve all fates in chapter IV.
Correctly solve every fate in Chapter IV.
The Doom
CommonSolve all fates in chapter VII.
Correctly solve every fate in Chapter VII.
Obra Done
CommonSolve the entire book.
Solve the entire book - all 60 souls correctly identified with the right fates. Confirming all 60 completes the log and gives the good ending; the true-completion capstone, and usually the last honest achievement you earn.
Abandon Ship
UncommonLeave the ship without solving all available chapters.
A secret. Climb back into the rowboat you arrived in and leave the ship before you've solved all available chapters (before the game tells you there's nothing left to do aboard). Easiest grabbed deliberately - it pairs with Captain Did It, and doing it on a backup save keeps your honest progress safe.
Captain Did It
RareLoosely true, in the eyes of Company and Crown.
The secret "blame the captain" bad ending. Progress far enough to have viewed every accessible memory, then attribute every death to Captain Robert Witterel - assign a homicidal cause ("axed" is simplest) to each soul, and set the captain himself as suicide; correct names aren't needed. The two souls only revealed in Chapter VIII (Perrott and Dahl) stay unassigned. Board the rowboat when the boatman warns of the coming storm. Do this on a separate save so you don't corrupt an honest solve.
